it’s been a good one

it’s time to grow up. aye, i reckon it is.

this year, i took a fairly long break to chill and celebrate my birthday. Was telling a good friend a couple of weeks ago, that I can’t believe we’d be hitting 30 soon. Not yet, but soon. With growing up, come responsibilities and commitments.

And hopefully with that, a bit more wisdom (bar the white hair thankyouverymuch).

the break started on 7th April, and will be ending by the close of tomorrow. BAH. But so far so good. I was fortunate that Donald was able to take time off from work to spend time together with me, and we took it easy. Late mornings, late nights, late lunches, brunches, early dinners, spa treatments, shopping, talking, arguing. =P

On Saturday, we had the very wonderful high-tea at Tea Lounge. Tea Lounge is located at The Regent Hotel Singapore, which is part of the Four Seasons group. Donald and I had been there once for a long high-tea (lasting from 1.3opm till 5pm). I had an awesome time then, just chilling with him. This time, we had it with my family as part of my birthday treat. Heaps of food, and two pots of tea later, we were stuffed.

Passionfruit souffle with passionfruit & caramel dressing

The rest of my family was still heading to my maternal grandma’s house for dinner!! Yikes. Us? We went home to take a breather before our mahjong session with Donald’s colleagues.

I foresee this mahjong thing to soon be a fortnightly affair?? hehe

Sunday, was lazier. Lazy brunch, lazy everything. I got into the whole gardening thing, putting a galvanised shelf outside the flat, together with the shelf that my dad made years ago.

previous herb garden set up in the kitchen

Basically, moved all the herbs outside, repotted some new seedlings (roma tomatoes!) and planted some rocket & italian mix salad seeds. Really proud of how the seedlings are growing, and it has been a steep learning curve cos the winds outside have snapped one of my bean seedlings. =( So Donald had to be very creative in making some stakes out of metal hangers so that I could bind the seedlings to the wire. *beams* As of this evening, there are rocket seedlings sprouting out! I’m uber stoked. I love rocket!

But a little sad to say that the kitchen looks really bare now without the herbs to give it a little homey look. I am reconsidering bringing the smaller pots back into the kitchen again..maybe get my dad to build me another smaller shelf to fit in the kitchen. Hmm..

Cooked dinner on Sunday night for my parents cos we’ve been eating out so often I was starting to get sick of eating out. There’s just something nice about cooking dinner, with a storm outside. *grin* I cooked a dish that I last tasted about 15 years ago. Could have been more years ago, but my last memory of having that dish was aaaages ago. Recently found kachang botol (wing beans) at the neighbourhood market, but missed the opportunity to buy it, only to rediscover it at Tekka Market a couple of days ago. So, I decided to make a wild first attempt at frying it, no recipe to follow, and with totally random available ingredients too! Stole some rempah from the sambal prawns that I was going to cook that night, fried some dried shrimp, threw in some chopped garlic & the sliced wing beans, poured some of the water that I soaked the dried shrimp in, and…

hoped for the best. And this was the best I could do.

wing beans with chillied dried shrimp

Mom said it was good, so it must be good. haha. It was a first for Donald, not much comments from him except he’ll eat it if it was presented in front of him. Meh. -_-”

Today. The day I turned 29. It was a good day. *smiles* Started the day off with prata, then a spa treatment consisting of a massage & a scrub, and then Universal Studios Singapore. I made the promise to myself that I would take the BSG  roller coaster ride if I got the free tickets to USS.

We got the USS. We stood in front of the BSG. We watched a couple of rides go by. I know that it’s about 90 seconds long. It didn’t look that bad. I mean, I’m an adult, I should be able to handle this. Pffffpt. 75% up to the gates of the ride..my legs were quaking. I have NEVER taken a roller coaster ride before. WTH. I closed my eyes throughout the entire ride, and even though I couldn’t see, I could feel. Just typing about this is making my heart leap. Goodness. It was the longest 90 seconds of my entire life.

The BSG Cylon

I exited the ride with jelly legs, and I couldn’t bear to sit the BSG: Human. Donald happily went off on his own. After watching the ride from another point of view at the USS, I couldn’t believe I just sat through that ride. But boy was I glad that I sat through it with my eyes closed!! Else I probably would have been in a catatonic state. Seriously.

We bummed around USS for the rest of the day. Our entire theme park journey lasted about 3.5 hrs (thank goodness the tickets were free!). Caught a WaterWorld show, which was quite decent. The audio wasn’t too fantastic, couldn’t catch half of what the actors were saying, but effects were pretty cool. Overall, I probably wouldn’t go to the theme park again, though I had quite some fun.

Spent the last few hours of daylight at Vivo Marche, with a mushroom soup, rosti, and a sweet crepe between the both of us, and then it was home. Donald has to go back to work tomorrow, blah.

Me? I’ve got more buckeye balls to make, and some last minute shopping! *cheeky grin*

bah, been so utterly busy (and a little lazy) that I haven’t been writing much. And..to think we renewed the domain name and domain mapping for another year! haha. =p Donald’s fairly insistent on it. But he should write too lah…meh.

Anyhoos, today’s marks our 5th year 3rd month of dating anniversary. which is also our 9th month together as being married (according to the SG wedding). =D awww.

egg container

had bought a individual egg container on our honeymoon last year on a sly. the purpose was to write daily messages into the egg for each other to read. as you can see from my “I want to..” series (which I should really complete!!), obviously it didn’t quite happen. but I’d write on special occasions, like today. haha.

the last time anything was written inside was when Donald left Perth to go back and start work, and I was bawling my eyes out writing a note. and then I chucked it into his luggage so that it would be a surprise for him. haha. like siva sez, “girls are good at these stuff.” I should be charging him for all the stuff that I’ve thought up for him man!! from the mother’s day pressie, to an anniversary pressie for his wife, which was quite a joke, and we couldn’t stop giggling when we were prepping it. *solemn* we were being very mischievous at work. hahahah.

Donald’s just grabbed it and gone into hiding to read the notes. *roll eyes*

So, work’s been insane. I meant to cook this week for dinner, but I was so busy that I was coming home late every night, well, last evening being the exception. we still went out to eat tho..haha. clocking up a fair bit of OT, so it’s all good! Something extra at the end of the month. And it’s also been good that I’ve been busy. It just means that I don’t get to snack as often as I want. My table’s horrendously filled with junk food and files. And when Azi is stressed, she’ll call out for the contained that’s filled with chips, which I’ll obligingly handover. I joked that we should have weighed ourselves in June, and then weigh ourselves again in Dec, just to see how much weight we’d have put on. Really bad for us to be junk food neighbours. hahah.

Work’s been insane, but awesome. And hilarious. I was speaking with a manager, and giving him some information about an event he had to attend. He mistook it and thought I was sending him for a course, and told me that he had already completed university. It was the way he said it, plus I was already gonna laugh about a pun that I had intended to say, on top of him mistaking my intention. I ended up laughing, and I couldn’t stop. I had to tell him that I’d call him back.

And I laughed and laughed, with my boss and Azi looking weirdly at me. Well, they got why I was laughing so hard when I told them what happened. Thank goodness he wasn’t at his table when I had to call back, cos I wasn’t ready. I was still smiling when the phone was ringing. So pai seh!!

I’m glad work’s mostly filled with laughter. Really makes the day get by easier. *grin*

So, after a crazy weekend the week before last, where we bought a bed, a System 4 airconditioning unit, and a sofa for our new place, the following week was quiet. Donald joined me and the ladies of the Chew family (maternal side) for an afternoon of mahjong and dinner out, cos my uncle and aunt weren’t home, and Grandma was mostly left alone. Sunday was spent going around Woodlands checking out dining tables. And I found my perfect dining table within the right price range!!

And of course, Donald found his perfect dining table that is out of the price range. -_-” why my husband like that one huh??

It’s tiring to keep going around and checking out designs and going to more retail shops. but the varieties out there really amazes me. Especially the fugly ones. Madness lah! Thing about me is that once I see one that I really like..we don’t really have to see any others. haha. Call me closed minded, but I already have an image of what the furniture should look like. =P

After that, we went on a date at Holland Village for dinner and dessert. Donald had said that on the way to dessert, he’ll bring me to my favourite place. In my mind I was like, ‘Coffee Club for ice earled vanilla??’ hahaha. But nooo..it was actually better. A brightly lit shop that sold kitchen ware. *swoooon* A man after my heart =P I spent about 30 mins in there, and saw that they had the Australia Good Food magazine there as well. So yay! =P

Well, new weekend, and we’re off to check out more suppliers for our home. It’s really coming together!! Damn excited.

of late

Posted on by

of late, donald and i have been busy. the whole renovation works thing has died down a bit and things have come to a crawl. a brief respite from all the designing, budgeting and planning. well, not really the right time to slow down, considering it’s the GSS and we should be out there checking out prices and buying some stuff. (when does the GSS end btw??)

and the funny thing is that we are supposed to be making a decision about the contractors and interior designers by the end of the month. whee…oh joy.

of late, donald and i have been busy. donald’s taken up a secondary part time teaching job. he’s enjoying it, and it also means one less evening for us to spend time bumming around each other. i work a little later on those nights, since I’ve got nothing else to do at home anyways. like last night. i’m guessing it’s not that bad for him. if he’s got time to work late, and still watch World Cup, it can’t be that bad =P

and it also means extra shopping money for me, no? =P

of late, donald and i have been busy. we didn’t take the time to celebrate father’s day with my dad as well. we were waiting for my mom to come back from her exciting holiday in NZ, and we’d all go out together. so hopefully daddy understand *sheepish*

and i was waiting for my cookies too =P my precious, my Bryon Bay Cookies. mmMMM.

of late, donald and i..oh bugger. more like i’ve been getting busy at work. i’m learning so much more now, and i feel like i’m. dealing with exciting stuff. the colleagues who’ve been at it for the past 4 years or so might think otherwise, but i’m really enjoying it! Doing investigations, writing reports, handling foreign workers, learning about the law and the procedures. Heaps of research but learning on the go. I almost wish that I can keep at this forever. haha. I say almost because between this kind of work, and staying home to look after my child, I’d choose the latter.

and no, I’m not pregnant. it’s a choice that donald and i made before we got married. =) but that’s another 1.5 years away. save up a little more and we can talk about it.

of late, donald and i miss arguing with each other, only cos we’ve been busy. donald just said he wished  we had time to argue, at least it meant we were together. haha. we’ve been good lately, haven’t we? maybe it’s cos you’ve got World Cup to keep you occupied and I’ve got my magazines and baking to keep me occupied.

speaking of which, i baked Anzac cookies on Monday..and they were awesome. Oat-sy goodness. mmMM…I think I like them as monster cookies rather than smaller cookies. Recipe did say makes 24. I ended up with only 15. Bah. But monster 15 cookies. Simple to bake, and the kitchen smelt heavenly. up next on the list are pecan and chocolate chip cookies for dear Aziana, my smurf in the office. =P

off to have a decent high tea buffet at Merchant Court tomorrow, and then a walk to Fremantle Seafood Markets at Clarke Quay! how exciting!! Can’t wait to check out the alfonsino there. my favourite fish, mmM..that’s on the menu for dinner on Sunday if it’s available!
