[SCApril’16] Twins-mania

Posted on by

Once we found out we were pregnant with #3, the nausea hit shortly. And it was bad. It was so so bad. Well, I wasn’t one to go rushing to the sink/towel bowl to retch, so I just sorta try and hold it all in. It surely screwed up my appetite. I gained 4kg in 2 weeks! WTH.

And well…because we could keep testing with the cheap test kits, and the results always showed up super fast, I couldn’t help but secretly hoped we were expecting twins. Come on, surely we had double the HCG levels that’s why the results showed up so quickly?? Hahaha. Okay, granted I was secretly hoping, I wasn’t so sure I could handle twins! Then came the news from my pregnancy buddy (all our kids are born within weeks of each other!) cum close friend that SHE was expecting twins. Hahahahha. I had a good laugh. No, wait. Donald and I had a good laugh. We knew that it was definitely not what our close friends were expecting! The joke was on them =P

This month, Singapore’s Child featured the MoMo twins, Leia & Lauren on April’s cover. If you didn’t know who they are, they are Instagram feymus Monoamniotic-Monochorionic twins (Mo-Mo) – identical twins who share the same (one) amniotic sac but each has a separate umbilical cord. Such pregnancies are really rare, with an occurrence of 1 in 35,000 to 1 in 60,000 pregnancies! What more, the twins were conceived naturally!

Waaaaah. This is like striking lottery in an oh-so-different manner. Haha.

If you have had twins, or are expecting twins, how was your pregnancy journey like? Tell us all about it!

[SCMarch’16] Going back to basics & having picky eaters!

Posted on by

When it comes to our kids, we are always on the look out for ways to entertain them. Play for me when I was a kid meant heading to the playground, and getting covered in sand; it meant heading to the jetty with my uncles to go fishing; it meant going to the beach for some cycling.

These days, playgrounds are “safe” with padded flooring; we prefer to bring the kids to indoor playgrounds where it is cooler; we head to the zoo; we go to museums; we head to water-parks. The husband and I were concerned about how technology was easily creeping into our lives (the kids know how to switch on the tv first thing in the morning *sigh*) and I wanted to make sure that they had their share of outdoor activities.

But sometimes, it may be inconvenient for us to head outdoors due to transport, and indoor playgrounds can get expensive (prices start from $20 onwards), and when you get people like Daddy Ting who doesn’t think much of the playground behind our block (so dirty!)

What happens next? Well..start cracking, you’ll be surprised how far your imagination can take you (with some retail help obviously!)

One of the earlier activities I remember doing with Ollie was to line all the stuffed animals we had around the house. It was during the super bad haze of 2013. We couldn’t go out for days and it was driving us insane. So I placed him on a push-ride and we pretended that we were on the tram at the zoo! Haha, it gave me an opportunity to teach Ollie a little more about the animals, how we could be spelling them, and what food they might eat.

When Ollie was older, I decided that he should write a book! We wrote simple one liner stories about our family. We have a really huge family (extended family included). I would write the words he sorta dictated (lots of prompting going on) and he would draw how each family member looked like.

Thinking back..it was really loads of fun doing all these activities! And even today, Ollie still looks forward to all these activities. A little brain draining but wahh ..need to encourage these kind of imagination! Err and ironically, thankful for the internet for wonderful ideas to keep the kids engaged!

This month’s issue of Singapore’s Child provides some little tips on how to engage your child in natural play, both indoors and outdoors! I’m all for getting down and dirty for the kids to reconnect back with nature. I am just missing a backyard..argh (apartment gardening didn’t really work out due to my lack of green fingers..though we did have some lessons in how seeds germinated!). So do grab your issue of Singapore’s Child!

I was also going through the Singapore’s Child website and my top pick for this month is definitely the article on picky eating. You have NO idea how picky Ollie is about his food. When it is his favourite food, I definitely don’t have to worry about him eating even double portions of it. When it comes to new food..URGH. He eyes it suspiciously, asks us what it is, and maaaaybe, just maybe he will give it a tentative lick, and he may accept it. Or he will say yucks and never touch it again. To give you an idea, Ollie hasn’t eaten fresh fruit in over a year.

I did figure that maybe we didn’t have a habit of eating fruits in front of him. Most of the times we will have dinner together, and that was about it. There are no issues with most vegetables, but fruits. He would rather forgo gummies, chocolates, and even his favourite marshmallows, than to eat, or even lick a fruit. How leh how leh?? We do look for alternative foods that he may be willing to try to ensure that he has a balanced diet, and gets enough nutrients. Here’s to hoping that he will be more receptive to newer foods as he grows older!

With QT? Pfffpt..never had a problem. This kiddo loves his food so much that he will gamely try anything. He even loves the pickled ginger that they serve at sushi joints, or julienned ginger that is served with xiao long baos! Argh..what did I do wrong with Ollie that I did right with QT har??

SuperMom Oh Baby Bump! – the aftermath

Posted on by

I had a mad packed weekend. And got an evil eye from the husband because I thought Singapore Turf Club was at the Grandstand. Oops. Hahah. Okay, all was forgiven cos he got fed with some good food at the event. =P

Yup, we were at the SuperMom Oh Baby Bump! event held at Singapore Turf Club (near Kranji MRT hor). It was to be a huge baby shower for all pregnant moms and I was curious to see how it was all gonna pan out at the racecourse. The dress code was English Tea Party but hahaha, being the fashion idiot I am, I turned up in shorts and err, my Havaianas. I think I walked into the wrong party, I should have been at the Hokkien Teh Party.

Anyways. Walked into an area where mummies were so dressed up!! *ashamed of own dressing* Dresses, some in heels *respect*, the hubbies dressed up too and it was a nice atmosphere. Registered myself and saw that mummies were given stickers to identify their EDD. Great idea, so that the vendors & sponsors there could easily cater to their needs!

I was starving when I got there. I spied an AIA popcorn booth, yay! 20160227_140132I think what was nice about having the event at this location was the space and the privacy. I realised that there was sorta like a little room behind the popcorn booth. It provided the agents and attendees some privacy and quiet, away from the ongoing programmes. So all very comfortable!

Some of the vendors and sponsors who were at the event! It was really nice to be able to try some of the products available there. There was even heavily discounted manicure & pedicure services ($38 only!) for the mummies to pamper themselves at the event. I mean..wah lao, have you tried cutting your toenails whilst you have a huge belly in front of you??

I finally had a chance to try out the premium skincare range from Pigeon Singapore! I had seen it around in Guardian and was curious about it, especially when the skincare range is developed to mimic the natural coat of protection found on baby’s skin in the womb. It smelt really nice! Scored a sample from them and will be giving it a shot on QT when his skin reacts again.

The other highlight of my afternoon had to be the food. Sorry lar, I was starving. The popcorn didn’t cut it. Eelyn from SuperMom and I had an in depth discussion about popcorn. Haha. Sorry AIA, your popcorn didn’t make the cut. But your agents are awesome for standing in to cook and provide the popcorn! =) The food that got my attention was…

Confinement food from Chilli Padi

Confinement food from Chilli Padi

I know right. I have NEVER taken confinement food before. Seriously. None of that kidney liver stirfry or longan tea or whatnots. But this..this soup was so yummy!! okay maybe cause I was freezing and hungry but it was still tasty! I didn’t even feel thirsty after drinking it. It really hit the spot.

And then hor…the catering for high-tea from Chilli Api came. *licks lips*

Good grief, I love the dry mee siam. It was just the right amount of wetness to it. The glutinous rice was nice too, moist. And not very peppery or salty like some. Some may find it bland, but I thought it was just right. The charcoal chocolate cake was too cute with their icing decoration! I was a happy girl after all that food. And so was the hubby for accompanying me. haha.

Obviously the event wasn’t all about food lah. Hehe there were sharings from speakers from Mt Alvernia Hospital, contests where I saw a couple won a stroller, and later saw a husband sticking stickers on his wife’s belly for the Cutest Belly contest. It was such an intimate moment but so cute lah, the two of them.

Last but not the least, the awesome goodie bags! Err, there was a really yummy goodie bag from Sweetest Moments and we devoured that at the picnic later that evening, so paiseh ah, no photos. But I can at least show you what was in the other goodie bag!

20160227_201937

No shit. It was really a good goodie bag. Dunno where to start from.

But thanks for the invite, SuperMom! I had a great time at your event!
